Cannabis is slowing becoming one of the most commonly used ingredients in food and beverage recipes. While you should not expect to experience a euphoria or high from these foods and beverages, you can still enjoy cannabis’ many health benefits.
With that said, mixing cannabis with alcohol will produce a desirable, but very powerful high. Cannabis-infused alcohol is something that probably cannot be found in stores, so to enjoy you will need to make it from scratch.
It is not recommended for beginner to consume cannabis-infused alcohol, because it is a very potent beverage. In fact, there are risks of mixing the two substances. Of course, there is no scientific evidence to back of these risks, but some people have reported experiencing what is known as “greening out”.
Greening out is extremely dangerous and life threatening, as it is considered an overdose on marijuana. Then there is the risk of alcohol toxicity.
Both of these conditions are life threatening and will require immediate medical attention. Keep in mind that if you drink cannabis-infused alcohol moderately, you will enjoy a unique and pleasant high.
Use Alone Or As A Substitute
The first decision you will need to make is choosing to mix cannabis with a single distilled alcohol, such as brandy or rum, or utilize it as a substitute in a cocktail. Whichever you choose will not alter the recipe very much. So, if you want to substitute a specific alcohol in a cocktail or just mix it with a distilled alcohol, you will basically follow the same recipe below.
The first step is to gather your ingredients and supplies. The ingredients include:
- Distilled alcohol (substitute with cocktail ingredients)
- Cannabis buds (amount is up to you, but remember more cannabis means more powerful effects)
The supplies include:
- Cutting board
- Oven-safe tray
- Coffee filters or cheesecloth
- Small pot
- Glass bottle with cork
- Glass mixing bowl
- Quart Mason jar
The second step involves preparing the buds. The key to making quality cannabis-infused alcohol is dicing the buds to a very find consistency. You can utilize a knife and cutting board to dice the buds or a mini food processor. Mincing produces small chunks than chopping and dicing. The amount of buds you utilize will depend on your preferences. Remember, the more cannabis you utilize in this recipe will produce more powerful effects. So, if you want to enjoy this beverage without the risk of greening out, you should utilize a small quantity of cannabis buds.
Step three involves baking the buds. Place the cannabis on an oven-safe tray, being sure to spread evenly. Preheat the oven to 320 degrees Fahrenheit (160 degrees Celsius). Place the tray in the oven only after it reaches the recommended temperature. Let bake for 30 minutes before removing.
After 30 minutes remove the tray from the oven and then allow to cool to room temperature. If you have chosen to utilize a cocktail, this will be the perfect time to prepare it. Once you are done with that, you will then mix the buds and alcohol in a mixing bowl. Pour into a Mason jar and seal tightly.
Storage is very important for this recipe. You will need to find a cool, dark space for storage. Place the jar in storage for up to seven days. Be sure to shake the liquid thoroughly at least once a day while it is in storage.
After seven days remove the jar from storage. Place the cheesecloth over the glass mixing bowl and slowing pour in the liquid. This process will remove unwanted plant material from the liquid. If any plant material can be detected in the liquid, you will need to strain it again. Now, your homemade cannabis-based alcohol is ready to be consumed.
Cannabis-based alcohol is delicious and safe to consume in moderate amounts. You can share it with friends and family, but be sure to forewarn them about the risks of toxicity. If you want to speed up the activation period, you can simmer the mixture until it comes to a boil.
This process works very effectively in activating the THC in the cannabis, but many of the experts do not recommend it.
