Drug Testing

Opiates are drugs that derive from the Papaver somniferum “poppy” plant. Opium dates back to the Neolithic age, which began nearly 12,000 years ago. They are utilized to make a variety of drugs, including Schedule II and illegal. These drugs are so addictive that they cause severe physical and psychological dependence.

All drug tests are designed to detect opiates, such as codeine, heroin and morphine. While some people utilize opiates for recreational purposes, others utilize it to treat their pain. Unfortunately, some people ingest opiates without their knowledge.

In fact, they do not even realize that they are ingesting these drugs until they fail a drug test. Now, you are probably wondering how in the world can someone ingest opiates unknowingly. Well, they basically eat foods that contain opiates.

Poppy Seeds

Many countries utilize poppy seeds, oilseeds, in a variety of recipes. These recipes include bagels, strudels, casseroles, pancakes, salad dressings, waffles and breads. The only downside to utilizing poppy seeds in recipes is they contain opiates that can be detected through drug testing. Poppy seeds are tiny and shaped like a kidney with an earthy, nutty flavor.

Poppy seeds are also for medicinal purposes as well. These purposes include diarrhea, constipation, sleep deprivation and asthma. Derived from the poppy plant, poppy seeds have the potential to cause false positive drug tests.

It was reported in 2010 that a Pennsylvania woman was administered a drug test when giving birth at a local hospital. Unfortunately, Elizabeth Mort failed the drug test. According to the woman, she had consumed a bagel with poppy seeds prior to giving birth.

Mort denied the claims that she knowingly or willingly took opiates. The only explanation she could come up with was the bagel with poppy seeds that she had purchased at a local Dunkin Donuts on the morning she gave birth.

A similar incident occurred in 1990, where a St. Louis police officer underwent a random drug test after consuming a bagel with poppy seeds. It was determined that poppy seeds contain traces of codeine and opium. The officer was suspended, but later got his job back.

hemp seeds

Hemp Seeds

Like poppy seeds, hemp seeds are utilized in a variety of recipes. These recipes include hummus, chocolate butter, pastries, and energy bars. While hemp seeds do not produce a euphoria (high), they are rich in protein. Unfortunately, THC can also be found in hemp seeds.

While the amount of THC in hemp seeds is only microscopic traces, it can be detected through modern drug testing. It has also been reported using hemp-based cosmetics can render positive results.

Tonic Water

Tonic water is believed to have many health and fitness benefits. However, it is crucial to consider all the ingredients in tonic water before actually consuming. One of the most notable ingredients found in tonic water is quinine, which was once utilized to treat diseases such as babesiosis, malaria, and restless leg syndrome.

The FDA later deemed quinine a dangerous drug and banned physicians from prescribing it to patients for restless leg. With that said, quinine can still be found in tonic water – each liter contains 83 milligrams.

Quinine is also utilized to make street drugs, such as heroin. So, individuals who test positive for quinine are often believed to utilize illicit drugs. However, this is not always the case since the drug can be found in a variety of tonics. The only way to ensure negative results is to avoid tonic water altogether.
