CHLB Will Celebrate its 90th Anniversary
From Issue: Volume XXII - Number 18
Ninety years ago, Fillmore Condit, former mayor of Long Beach, formed the Long Beach Community Hospital Association to raise $369,000 to build what is today known as Community Hospital Long Beach (CHLB). A five-day, well-coordinated campaign from September 17 to 22 raised the final $122,000 needed to build CHLB.
As a result, in 1924, CHLB opened its doors with 100 beds and a staff of 175 surgeons and physicians.
Today, CHLB remains committed to providing the highest standards of medical care without losing the warmth of the human touch and continues to grow and improve its critical services for the eastside of Long Beach. As a not-for-profit community hospital, CHLB – recently acquired by MemorialCare – is constantly re-investing in itself to expand and build critical programs that address community needs.
“For 90 years, Community Hospital Long Beach has served as a fixture and a critical health care access point for the greater Long Beach area,” says Diana Hendel, CEO, Community Hospital Long Beach, Long Beach Memorial and Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach. “With our shared culture, values, commitment and legacy of excellent not-for-profit health care, it was a natural fit that Community Hospital Long Beach would become part of the MemorialCare family, now more than three years ago.”
In 2011, CHLB joined the MemorialCare Health System and since then, the hospital continues to grow its programs. In 2013 alone, CHLB introduced four new mental health programs – filling a void of mental health services in Long Beach. This year, CHLB has expanded the access to specialists in both the emergency department and surgical care. And on Sept. 1, CHLB will begin using an electronic medical record system – part of an overall transformation to improve patient safety, service and satisfaction.
“Community Hospital Long Beach has been a cornerstone in our community and we look forward to being in the community for decades to come,” says Krikor Jansezian, administrator, Community Hospital Long Beach. “We want to be part of the growth and expansion of the emergent health care industry and develop new programs that have not yet been introduced. Just this year, with improvements to our emergency department, we have reduced wait times, decreased the number of patients who left without being seen and decreased our diversion hours by 50 percent. Later this year, we will introduce our new addiction medicine program for those that are suffering from either alcohol or drug addiction.”
Throughout September, CHLB is inviting its neighbors to learn more about its growth and join in its 90th anniversary celebration at three community events on Thursday, Sept. 11, 18 and 25. Each celebration will highlight a different area of the hospital including the emergency department, surgical specialties and the MemorialCare Center for Mental Health & Wellness – giving the community a chance to get to know the staff and learn more about the programs offered at CHLB.
“So many people have such fond memories of Community Hospital Long Beach,” says Jansezian. “We want to open our doors to our neighbors so they can help us celebrate our past, but also become a part of our future.”
