Summer Picnic

The Downtown Lions Club will be having its 28th Annual Barbecue, on Saturday August 9, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come join the Lions for hamburgers, hot dogs, cookie desserts, sodas, beer, wine and a whole lot of fun. $10 per person, kids under 3 are free. Tickets will be available at the door. There will be a drawing for prizes, money hats, moon bounce, face painting and kids’ crafts. Entrainment will be provided by Hawkeye.

Book Signing

Meet local author, Goez at the signing of his new fiction book, “The Wanderings of An Ant” at Apostrophe Books, 5229 E. 2nd St. on Sunday, Aug., 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Goez, writer and fine artist, studied creative literary writing at UCLA and Cal State University, Northridge. He is currently developing his next book tentatively entitled, The Prelude to the Journey, which parallels with the dynamic inception of his newly released fiction book, “The Wanderings of An Ant,” for age groups of young adult and up.

The Cerritos Tennis Club is looking for current and past members to join in celebrating their 40th Anniversary Reunion on Saturday, August 16, at Heritage Park in Cerritos. It grew to more than 450 members with the 70s and 80s being the “hay days” of tennis.

Free Training

Students at Cabrillo, Jordan or Poly High Schools who are interested in pursuing healthcare careers can participate in a healthcare academy that will make them eligible to enroll in a free Certified Nurse Assistant Training Program. Offered by Goodwill, Serving the People of Southern Los Angeles County, the program provides a career path for low-income students who have no college plans but demonstrate an interest in healthcare. Saturday with Suzie

Councilwoman Suzie Price will be holding her first, “Saturdays with Suzie” meeting on Saturday, Aug. 23, at the 3rd District Field Office (340 Nieto Avenue) at 9 a.m. The guest speaker will be City Manager Pat West, who will provide an update on the Fiscal Year 2015 Budget.

Rock n Roll

The Apartment Association, California Southern Cities invites you to the Rock n Roll lunch, interactive program and discussion featuring Dr. Lucy Jones on Sept. 18 at the Long Beach Convention Center. She will talk about the upcoming “Big One” followed by a live session to provide attendees an opportunity to develop their own plan on what steps to follow when the earthquake happens.

Dr. Jones is the leading expert in earthquake preparedness and this will be the only opportunity in this area that she will be speaking. In addition, there will be a session called Shake Out that will walk you through a day in the life of an earthquake.
