This Week in 100 Days of Summer: July 11-20

Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine and the Long Beach Convention and Visitor’s Bureau are teaming up for the fifth year in a row to offer www.100daysofsummer.org, a searchable calendar of free concerts & movies, Long Beach Sea Festival events, El Dorado Nature Center & historic site events, and ideas for spontaneous fun like hiking, biking, golf, tennis, swimming, and youth and teen programs. Here’s what’s coming up:

Long Beach Municipal Band Concerts:
Celebrating 105 years with a Summer Festival of Music
Bring family and friends, a picnic dinner. The birth of American jazz began in the early 1800’s with a new rhythmic style called Ragtime. This week’s concerts explore two great traditions of American music, Ragtime and Dixieland! Tony Galla joins the studio band. All concerts begin at 6:30 p.m.

July 15 – Bixby Bluff Park, Cherry Avenue & Ocean Blvd.

July 16 – Los Cerritos Park, 3750 Del Mar

July 17 – Marine Stadium, 5839 Appian Way

July 18 – El Dorado Park West, 2800 Studebaker Road

Symphonic Winds Concert:

July 18 6:30 p.m., Houghton Park, Free

The Shoreline Symphonic Winds performs classic wind band literature as well as contemporary film score transcriptions with performances year-round in the parks and concert venues of Long Beach. Their Blue Pacific Swing Band jazz ensemble, performs for community and social events.

Movies in the Park - “The Lego Movie,” sponsored by Signal Hill Petroleum.

The movie and popcorn are free, and the time spent with family is priceless! Bring a lawn chair, blanket, and picnic-style dinner. Movie begins at dusk. The story follows Emmet, an ordinary LEGO figure who is drafted into a fellowship of strangers to stop an evil tyrant.

“Caddy Shack” July15, Dusk, Granada Beach, Free

Love Long Beach Festival – July 19 & 20 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Granada Beach, Free. A celebration of all things we love about Long Beach: art, music, food, farmers market, and a luau. Sports include a 5k run, swim, paddle, beach volleyball, sand soccer, beach football, yoga, dog events and work out area. There will be a beach dance party Saturday with a Fire and Burning Man show. This event benefits the Long Beach non-profit, Children Today. Visit www.alfredosbeachclub.com.

Kahakai Outrigger Sprint Events
– July 19 & 20 8 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. Marine Stadium Free

The Kahakai Outrigger Canoe Club is hosting a day of outrigger sprint races for members of Southern California Outrigger Racing Association. The day will also feature keiki (kids) sprint racing and longer adult water change racing at Marine Stadium, great food, music, and Hawaiian style merchandise.
