Volunteers Needed

The MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute (TCI) at Long Beach Memorial is looking for volunteers. TCI volunteers support cancer patients, family and staff in providing assistance, comfort, and way-finding.

Spanish Seniors

The Long Beach Senior Latino Club is holding weekly beginners “Spanish as a Second Language” classes for seniors in the Long Beach and surrounding areas. The next semester starts Wednesday, January 8, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Instructions by Rosa Ruiz, focus strongly on reading, writing and speaking Spanish.

The classes, held at the Long Beach Senior Center, 1150 East 4th Street, Long Beach, CA, are open to people over 50 years of age. The 12-week session costs $25. Prior registration is mandatory, with a one-time $10 registration/supply fee required from first time participants. Space is limited, register early at the Latino Club office, Room 107-H, or for more information call (562) 570-3514.

Billy Budd Discussed

On Saturday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. the El Dorado Neighborhood Library at 2900 North Studebaker Rd. will host an LA Opera Community Educator, who will show a DVD and identify how the themes, highlights, visuals, and music of Benjamin Britten’s opera, Billy Budd are used in films today.

Exploring Billy Budd is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
