Summertime Beach Safety Tips

From Issue: Volume XXI - Number 13

Long Beach Lifeguards suggest using common sense when visiting the beach this summer. Tragedy in the ocean can happen quickly, therefore having knowledge of aquatic safety is critical when coming to the beach. Use the following safety tips:

* When swimming in the ocean, always swim near an open Lifeguard Station
* Never swim alone
* Supervise children closely, even when lifeguards are present
* Don’t rely on floatation devices, such as rafts or inner-tubes. Even US Coast Guard approved life jackets are not a substitute for swimming ability
* Don’t dive into unfamiliar waters. Enter feet first to protect your head, neck, and spine
* Follow regulations and the direction of lifeguards
* Never turn your back to waves in the ocean
* Never throw sand and always fill holes before you leave the beach
* Do not litter
* Use sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun
* Use caution when crossing bike paths
* Dogs are prohibited on school grounds, bike paths, or on beaches, except for designated “Dog Beaches”
* In an emergency, call 911. For non-emergencies or beach violations, call LB Lifeguard Headquarters at (562) 570-1360.
