Fallen Boy Scout Honored
From Issue: Volume XXI - Number 9
Temoc Castellanos, 15, who died suddenly December 14, 2012 from a congenital heart condition, was honored posthumously by the Long Beach Boy Scout Council with the Spirit of Scouting Award.
In a unanimous vote by the leadership and scouts of Long Beach Boy Scout Troop 75, Temoc Castellanos was honored and named the 76th Eagle Scout of Troop 75. His father Mario Castel-lanos accepted the awards and Eagle Badge with both incredible pride and sadness at the loss of his only child.
In addition, Troop 75 created a permanent memorial in the mountains and started an annual hike in Temoc’s name, who was an avid backpacker with the troop. The Temoc Inaugural Henniger Hike was started this April by a group of scouts, families and Temoc’s parents Mario and Mercedes Castellanos who hiked a trail in the Angeles National Forest where a plaque and three trees were planted at the peak of Henniger Flats.
Temoc was in 10th grade, a football player and on the principal’s honor roll at Jordan High School in Long Beach. He was running at football practice on December 11, 2012 at Jordan High when he collapsed on the track and later died. Temoc had a heart abnormality that the family did not know about until he collapsed.
