LB Rotary Awards $202,250 in CSULB Scholarships
From Issue: Volume XXI - Number 5
The Long Beach Rotary Scholarship Foundation (LBRSF) presented a $202,250 check to California State University, Long Beach officials at center court during the Feb. 13, men’s basketball game vs. CSU, Fullerton. The check represented 127 student scholarships funded by the foundation during the 2012-2013 school year. The scholarship recipients were invited to join the dignitaries on the court to participate in the check presentation.
Prior to the basketball game, Rotary members held a reception at The Pointe to honor this year’s recipients. Each year at CSULB, the LBRSF supports four President’s Scholars and more than 100 traditional scholarship students who receive an annual $1,500 stipend.
“The Long Beach Rotary Scholarship Foundation has been a proud sponsor of local college scholarships at both CSULB and Long Beach City College for close to 50 years,” said LBRSF Chairman Craig Dougherty. “Through the generosity of our Rotarians and careful fiscal forethought, we hope to continue providing this type of assistance to the youth in our community in perpetuity.”
“Much like the university, Long Beach Rotary embraces a commitment to student achievement,” said CSULB President F. King Alexander. “Ultimately, it’s not just our students that benefit. It is the greater Long Beach community that will gain from this type of assistance.”
Long Beach Rotary, founded in 1917, is the largest and oldest service organization in Long Beach. Rotary also sponsors a service club for students on campus, called the Rotaract Club.
Long Beach Rotary Scholarships are available to students from Long Beach area high schools who attend Long Beach City College and California State University, Long Beach.
