Snow Day
The annual Fourth District Snow Day is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23 at Whaley Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free and open to the public, Snow Day will feature tons of fresh snow for sled races and snowball making. Free parking will be offered to guests at CSULB’s Parking Lot 14 on Atherton St. There will be bounce houses, arts and crafts, hot dogs from the Long Beach Police and Fire Associations and free giveaways from various local merchants.
Electronic Waste
You are invited to participate in a free drop off of commercial and residential e-waste on Feb. 23 at Newcomb Academy, 7020 Brittian, parking lot from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wanted: business electronics, TVs, computer monitors, electrical cords, cell phones, ink cartridges, etc. No batteries or light bulbs accepted. Your Own Business
An innovative hands-on program identifies the business tools and strategies necessary to start and ensure a successful business. During the program you will develop your business plan and be ready to start your new business. The program begins on Saturday, Feb. 23, and continues on Saturdays through Mar. 16. Fashion Show
Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach Auxiliary (MCHLBA) is presenting its annual Fashion Show and Silent Auction on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Long Beach. African American Heritage
Long Beach Public Library and MusicUNTOLD present a screening of the 1948 classic Mexican film Angelitos Negros on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 6 p.m. in the Main Library auditorium. Starring popular Mexican actor Pedro Infante, the drama is about a woman who gives birth to a baby that is not white and then learns the woman who was her nanny is actually her mother. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles.
Following the film, MusicUNTOLD will present a live conversation and performance by soprano Hope Foye. Hope was a classically trained soprano, activist and protégé of Paul Robeson. Her passport was taken during the McCarthy era because she participated in a competition in East Germany. Hope spent the next years earning a successful career outside of the United States, including Mexico where she often performed the song Angelitos Negros. Hope is now 90 years young.

Free Nature Walk
Two ecologists will lead a nature walk of the Los Cerritos Wetlands on Saturday, Mar. 2, 8-10 a.m. Song birds, hawks, owls, rabbits and even coyotes can be seen in the wetlands. Participants will learn how the Tongva Native Americans relied on the resources of these wetlands. This walk is appropriate for ages 7 and up. Park on the inland side of the intersection of Pacific Coast Hwy. and 1st St., just at the border of Long Beach and Seal Beach.

Bixby Park Event
Friends of Bixby Park will host a dinner and silent auction on Thursday, Mar. 7, 5:30-9 p.m. at the Museum of Latin American Art, 628 Alamitos Ave. The event will raise funds to restore the historic Bixby Park, once the site for Iowan immigrant family picnics and influential political discussions and rallies.
The event will be hosted by KKJZ-FM radio host Helen Borgers, and it will include wine tasting, dinner, and a historic photo exhibit. The event will also feature guest speakers Jim Folsom, Director of Botanical Gardens at the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens in San Marino and historian guest speakers. Special appreciation will also be given to Harry Saltzgaver, editor of the Grunion Gazette. Tickets will cost $65 per person and $120 per couple. Eating/Exercise Fair
Junior League of Long Beach offers local families the chance to have fun while learning about healthy eating and exercise at the eighth annual Kids in the Kitchen. Co-sponsored by the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services Healthy Active Long Beach Project, the event is free and will be held on Saturday, Mar. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 1950 Lemon Ave.
This fun-filled day will include entertaining children-oriented health and nutrition activities such as fitness challenges, kid-friendly snack recipes, health-screenings, dance, martial arts, sports and youth club sign-ups, a bicycle rodeo, games, music and hourly raffle prizes. There will be free health screenings from St. Mary Medical Center, free bike helmets from Miller Children’s Hospital and Kid Tribe will perform Hoop-A-PaLoo-Za. Community Run
The 2013 Lakewood Community Run including 5K/10K runs and a 5K walk will be held on Saturday, Mar. 9 from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. rain or shine. Proceeds will fund projects and benefit local charitable organizations supported by Soroptimist International of Lakewood/Long Beach and the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station.
Earthquake Prepared
“Ready Long Beach” will be held Mar. 9 at the El Dorado Community Center, 2800 N. Studebaker Rd. The 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. program includes a brief historic look at the 1933 Long Beach earthquake followed by presentations from experts at USGS, FEMA, Cal EMA, Long Beach Fire Department, CERT and American Red Cross. A light lunch is included and then a “table top” exercise led by the representatives from the Long Beach Chapter of the American Red Cross to help participants prepare their neighborhoods.
