On Saturday November 17, 2012, at 6:22 p.m., Long Beach Police responded to a single vehicle traffic collision on Redondo Avenue at the 405 Freeway overpass, which resulted in the death of two male adults, and injury to a third passenger. Witnesses told officers that prior to the accident it was raining and the roadways were filled with water.
The preliminary investigation determined that the driver of a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 truck was traveling northbound on Redondo Avenue in the number one lane when it initiated a lane change to the number two lane. During this maneuver the driver lost control of the truck causing it to spin onto the sidewalk, where it struck the concrete support pillar for the 405 Freeway overpass.
Investigators believe the driver lost control of the steering as a result of excessive speed for the rainy conditions and this caused the truck to hydroplane.
The driver of the Dodge Ram, identified as 36-year-old Mark Martineau of Seal Beach, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The rear passenger, identified as 54-year-old Richard McAleavey from Long Beach, who was not wearing his seat belt, was also pronounced deceased at the scene.
The front passenger, identified as 36-year-old Terrence Harris of Long Beach, had to be extracted from the truck and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He died Sunday afternoon, police said.
Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact Long Beach Police Accident Investigations Detective Richard Birdsall at (562) 570-7355.
