Memorial Listed as High Performing

From Issue: Volume XX - Number 15
7/27/2012

Long Beach Memorial has once again been ranked as one of California’s best hospitals and was recognized for its high performances in seven specialty areas in U.S. News Media & World Report’s 2012-13 Best Hospitals rankings.

In the report, Long Beach Memorial ranked “high performing” in the areas of Diabetes & Endocrinology; Ear, Nose & Throat; Gynecology; Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery; Orthopedics and Urology. In each of these specialties, categories including patient survival rates, advanced technologies, patient volume, nurse staffing and patient services were measured, and Long Beach Memorial consistently received marks of ‘high,’ ‘highest’ and ‘better than expected.’

“As an organization, it is our mission to provide the highest quality of care while exceeding our patient’s expectations,” says Diana Hendel, president and CEO of Long Beach Memorial, Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach and Community Hospital Long Beach. “We’re honored to be included on the prestigious Best Hospitals list, and we’ve seen that year after year our different specialties consistently achieve these high standards of excellence.”

Long Beach Memorial has repeatedly been given high marks by many organizations for its award winning patient and family centered care. The hospital views family members as an extended part of the care team and a critical element in saving the lives and improving the outcome of all patients.

This is the first year that nationally ranked and high-performing hospitals will receive both state and regional rankings. Long Beach Memorial was ranked within the top 30 throughout California.

U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow says the hospital rankings are like a GPS-type aid to help steer patients to hospitals with strong skills in the procedures and medical conditions that present the biggest challenges.

“All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care,” says Comarow. “They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases.”

In its twenty-third annual edition, this year’s Best Hospitals issue showcases more than 720 of the nation’s roughly 5,000 hospitals. Fewer than 150 are nationally ranked in at least one of 16 medical specialties.

The rankings were published by U.S. News in collaboration with RTI International, a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Highlights of the 2012-13 rankings will appear in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2013 guidebook, to go on sale in August.
