Heights Fire Fatal to Two
TWO ELDERLY RESIDENTS living in what firefighters described as “pack-rat conditions” succumbed in an early morning fire Monday at Fifth St. and Grand Ave. The victims were identified as Alan Lugena, 73, and Patricia Babbitt, 81, by the LA County Coroner’s office. Although the single-family home is within two blocks of Fire Station 4 with units arriving within two minutes, it took 20 minutes to knock down the fire, which caused extensive damage. The cause is under investigation.
